Children at Davis Lar Orphanage Need Sponsors

Nayane

Mark and Paige Anderson are ACTION missionaries in Fortaleza, Brazil, where they minister at Davis Lar Orphanage. Four children who recently began living at the orphanage currently need sponsors. Paige writes about each below:

“Nayane just joined us at Davis Lar. Please pray for her as she continues the transition to her life with us. She is adjusting well and is a joy to us all.

“Ana Vitoria is a little girl with special needs. Please pray for her as we seek a diagnosis and evaluation that will allow us to better raise this precious child. Her disposition is wonderful!

“Jose Jefferson is a comedian! He constantly has us doubled over in laughter! Pray for his continued growth and his increasing interest in the Bible stories we share.

“Thalia is 13 years old. Please pray that God will help her overcome past trauma and that she will listen as wisdom is shared with her. Pray for her to rest in the Lord and accept the good things that are now being poured into her life.â€

Mustard Seed Girls Use Skills to Bless Children

Daryl and Sharon Germaine

Sharon Germaine teaches sewing skills to underprivileged Christian young women in the Mustard Seed program in the Philippines. Sharon currently works with ten girls in the areas of sewing and discipleship.

The girls recently used fabric that was given to Mustard Seed by Doug Nichols to reach out to the poor. Sharon says, “My students sewed 50 pairs of shorts that will be given to children in the nearby barrios. The girls at Mustard Seed are not only learning how to sew, but also how to use their skills to bless other people.â€

New Mentorship Ministry Opportunity in the Philippines

Walt and Sharon Becker

Walt Becker recently traveled to the Philippines along with three other ACTION missionaries to teach at a Pastoral Care Conference sponsored by Christian Growth Ministries (CGM) in partnership with ACTION.

While in the Philippines, Walt worked out an agreement with CGM to establish an online mentoring ministry. This ministry will give needy Filipino pastors the opportunity to receive further mentoring via SKYPE from Walt and other pastors. Please pray for this new ministry as it begins in late October 2010.

ACTION Zambia Missionaries Finish Marathon

ACTION Zambia Marathoners

Members of the ACTION Zambia team recently completed the Victoria Falls Marathon in Victoria, Zimbabwe, to raise money for Ciyanjano Campground and Ministry Center. Brent Roberts says, “The course was full of hills and the weather was hot, but we all finished and had a blast!

“We at ACTION Zambia thank everyone who supported us in this race for Zambia’s children. So far, as a team, we have raised over $8,000 for children’s camps to be held at Ciyanjano Campground and Ministry Center. We are already planning for the 2nd annual Victoria Falls Marathon next year!â€

Goats for Needy Families in Malawi

Family with Goat

Subsistence farmers deal in commodities instead of money and the success of their livelihood depends on crops and animals rather than monthly income. A Malawian subsistence farmer with chickens, pigs or goats is guaranteed food for his family as long as the animals continue to produce. Using this idea, Chet and LeAnne Burns work alongside local churches to distribute goats to provide assistance to orphans and widows.

Chet says, “Each participant is selected by their church and then given a female goat and materials to build a shelter. The goat’s first female offspring is given back to the church, which then donates it to another family in need. The funds generated by selling the male offspring are used to sustain the family and provide school fees for children.

“This project began two years ago with 300 goats; it has now been carried into the third generation! There have been some setbacks, but the project continues to grow. The local churches can now sustain a project which directly affects the lives of the people around them. Please pray that God would continue to bless the goat ministry.â€

Cambodian Summer Camp

Nathan Wells Teaching at Camp

Nathan and Christiana Wells recently took part in their church’s youth summer camp in Cambodia. Nathan says, “It was wonderful to fellowship with Cambodian youth from many places throughout the country. About 20 of the campers did not know the Lord; it was our pleasure to see some of them come to faith in Christ! We pray there will be lasting fruit in each camper’s life.

“God gave me much grace as I taught the Bible. I still have a long way to go with my language study, but it was a great encouragement to be given the opportunity to teach at this camp.â€

Pastoral Care Conference in the Philippines

Pastoral Care Conference

There are approximately 60,000 churches in the Philippines; 40,000 pastors of these churches have little or no training. From August 17 to 19, 238 pastors gathered for the 16th Annual Pastoral Care Conference sponsored by Christian Growth Ministries (CGM) in partnership with ACTION. Pastors came from Manila and surrounding provinces, some traveling 23 hours, to attend this conference.

A team of four ACTION missionaries from the USA taught at the conference:  Dr. Rod Pence, Pastor Bruce Ingram, Pastor Walt Becker and Patrick O’Connor. Pastor Ramos from the Philippines also taught. The biblical teaching encouraged pastors to be faithful to Christ, the gospel and God’s vision for life and ministry.

Workshops were sandwiched between the general sessions; subjects included mentoring, church planting, shepherding the flock, transformational leadership, and the pastor’s ministry to his family. The pastors cherished the sets of resource books they received from BookShare at the conclusion of the conference. They did not want the conference to end, but returned to their homes and ministries renewed by their times of worship, biblical teaching, and prayer.

Drug Rehabilitation Center in Brazil

Current Group at the Rehabilitation Center

Mário and Lika Milhomem praise God for what He is doing at the drug rehabilitation center in Goiânia, Brazil! There are currently 40 men in successful recovery.  The majority of the men leave the house not only recovered, but also with a newfound faith in Jesus Christ. Three men who recovered last year are now participating in Discipleship Training School.

The rehabilitation center can only house 40 men. Mario and Lika pray for the provision of a larger facility; the leadership is forced to turn people away daily because the center is at maximum capacity.

Mustard Seed Graduates

Mustard Seed Class

Mustard Seed is a nine month residential vocational discipleship program, located in Silang, Cavite, Philippines, that teaches young Christian women aged 18 to 22 how to sew.

Three graduates from the last class recently finished six months of On the Job Training at local sewing shops. ACTION missionary Barbara Burchert says, “These girls have done very well; the owners of the shops were pleased with what the girls accomplished! We had a celebratory lunch at which the girls shared testimonies of what God has done in their lives. The girls are currently applying for permanent work.â€

Income Generating Project in Zambia

Digging a Trench for Electric Cables

The first of ACTION Zambia’s income generating projects, Ciyanjano Hammer Mill, is now under construction. In the rural area surrounding the Ciyanjano Christian Enrichment Center, there are many farms that grow maize. A hammer mill is a machine which shells and grinds the maize into mealie, a staple food of the Zambian diet. This hammer mill will supply revenue to sustain the ministry center and also provide local villagers with a nearby place to process their maize.

ACTION Zambia has developed a three year plan for the income generation and livelihood training ministry; the Ciyanjano Hammer Mill is only the beginning. Please pray for the development of this ministry.
